This week we'll take a closer look at two photographers who challenge the idea of typical "street" photography. We'll take time to review examples of their work, examine their technique and methods and discuss what goes into their art including what makes a true photograph. As usual, please bring any photos you would like to share! They can be street shots, or any shots of your choosing. ~ Anand

The Budweiser plant in Merrimack, NH on the first Saturday of every month has "Camera Day with the Clydesdales" from 1pm to 3pm. Yes's and maybes will get an email with my cell phone number if you get lost. I finally had a chance to contact the tour center and they told me the event is more to have your photograph taken with the horse. They might have one or two horses outside, it all depends on the trainer. The event essentially takes place in the stables and you are photographed with a horse rather than taking photos of the horses.

For our March meetup, we'll be viewing the following film. Viewing time is about an hour. As usual, bring some shots for sharing to start our meeting! Here's the summary of the film: National Geographic: The Photographers
Often letting the work speak for itself, this compelling documentary looks into the lives of veteran National Geographic photographers and the grueling work that goes into their award-winning shots. The photographers provide detailed accounts of their preparation, the dangers they've encountered and the physical trials they've endured.

Backgrounds play an integral part in the emotional impact of an image. So often we fixate on the subject in the photo, but it's the background that really gives it depth, pop, and sets the stage for a compelling image. Come and share some shots, bring questions, or come and learn about how to get great backgrounds for your photos. I've created a handout with some examples, but really want to augment it with many, many more examples of backgrounds across the spectrum: good, bad, so-so, whatever! I will also give a little talk about the Importance of background in your composition. thanks

The 21st Quincy Lunar New Year Festival will take place on Sunday, February 8th at North Quincy High School (316 Hancock Street, Quincy, MA 02171). Festivities will include a traditional lion dance, an array of Asian food by local restaurants, martial arts demonstrations and performances from traditional and modern music and dance troupes. There will be cultural performances on the main stage; activities for children such as face-painting, games and crafts; and entertainment for seniors. Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in China, Vietnam, Korea, and Japan as it is a time of reunion and thanksgiving. This year, we will celebrate the year of the Ox, which according to Asian culture has a reputation for having an open and honest nature. A person born in this year is dependable, calm and modest. The celebration of the Lunar New Year in Quincy will bring the community together to learn about Asian cultures and will give everyone (Asian and non-Asian) the opportunity to celebrate this important holiday together. The festival is a free event and all are welcome to attend.
