Backgrounds play an integral part in the emotional impact of an image. So often we fixate on the subject in the photo, but it's the background that really gives it depth, pop, and sets the stage for a compelling image.

Come and share some shots, bring questions, or come and learn about how to get great backgrounds for your photos.

Here are some inspiring examples:

*Man on boardwalk
*Macro water droplets
*Photoshopped example: skateboard

So, bring good, and not so good examples of how a background has affected an image of yours, or examples of other photos with similar themes.

It's all about backgrounds!

If anyone has any other photos to share of recent things, bring those too!

Our monthly meeting will feature the documentary: "Rivers & Tides". See below for details.

The film is 90 minutes. We'll have our regular meeting first, at 7 pm, and start the film at 7:30pm.

Notes:
-- If you need assistance getting in the building, please call Anand's cell at: 603-548-0359.
-- If folks have an interest in this film, but can't make this meeting time, please make a note in the RSVP section, and we'll try to schedule an encore presentation on Sunday, Nov 23rd at 3pm. We'll only schedule it if there's sufficient response.

Rivers & Tides info:

Andy Goldsworthy is a remarkable artist whose medium and canvas are the natural world. Many of his works are so temporal and created in such remote, untrammeled locations that the only way most of his audience experience his works is through photographs.

"Rivers & Tides" is a striking documentary, cinematically gorgeous, and poetically narrated by Goldsworthy himself.

Here is a representative review from Amazon:

"For those who are not familiar with Andy Goldsworthy's work, he creates sculptures from nature, using rocks and tree branches and grass and anything else around the location he has chosen. He has decided specifically to create scultpures that will only stand temporarily, as he searches for a better understanding of life, death, and the passage of time. This film does a fantastic job of exploring the creative process and amazing things that can happen when an artist continues to experiment and look for new opportunities. Through this discovery, Goldsworthy passes on to us his philosophy and unique perspective on the world. It is truly a visually beautiful film and worth watching on that merit alone. For those of us who are artists, it is a must-see, both to learn and identify with someone who has a beautiful understanding of the world."

--Glynn Clapsaddle (Amazon reviewer)

Hope to see you there!

I really can't stand to use the word Japanophile since I really have a fascination about the world ( okay I'm a worldophile) but indeed I have been fascinated with everything Japanese ! From their language ( especially when a woman speaks) , to their food , their fabrics and the RIGHT way of wearing a kimono to wrapping it back into its special box , its fashion designers like Yamamoto or comme-des , to Akira Kurasawa and his " Dreams " to "Dodesukaden" ,the whole anime industry , their knives and swords , ....and yeah ,yeah their cameras too... Although I really HATE their over fishing industry and we wont go there with their whale hunting ( dont get me started on the subject) but hopefully animal lovers like me , will stop that soon.

But this one is something that I first wanted to do solo but I'm going to share it with you:

Bonsai !

they are passionate about Bonsai, and it shows!

Bonsai West has the most extensive collection of specimen Bonsai outside of Japan, featuring the work of American Bonsai artists such as Mr and Mrs Hatanaka, Mr Yamasaki, Roy Nagatoshi, Nick Lenz, Mr Ishii, Guy Guidry, Colin Lewis, Jim Smith and Michael Levin - as well as trees styled by artists in Japan, Korea, and China.

Bonsai West has become a destination for bonsai lovers from throughout the world. You can take our online tour to give you a first impression, but why not come out and visit us yourselves: you'll find it well worth your while.

they are located on two acres of New England farmland, in Littleton, Mass, right on Route 2A.
A 300-year-old farm house overlooks our outdoor bonsai garden and gallery, our five greenhouses and teaching/demonstration areas.

I will have more info on this event , as I really don't know YET that if there is an entrance fee to get in (large group) or not . But I'll find out soon!

you need to have a car to get there , we can carpool!

more info your way! http://www.bonsaiwest...

Oh ,yeah the image ( Chrome) is mine and it 's called " Moon rising Over kyoto I " , it was taken in kyoto , that is the Moon and it got to the MFA.

Anand asked me to post this meetup.

This event is geared toward beginners and experienced photographers alike.
We'll get together to show our recent work, taking the time to share our
inspiration and techniques, ask questions, learn and collaborate. We'll
utilize everyone's experience to talk about what works or doesn't work,
ways to experiment, thoughts on fully utilizing equipment, great things
and places to shoot, etc.

We'll be displaying images on a 24" high resolution monitor in the studio.
For inclusion, please bring 5-10 images on a USB key.

Technical info:
If you do not have a USB key, now may be a good time to invest in one! 1
Gb devices are going for as little as $14. Here's a good one made by
SanDisk, available at Best Buy:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7332095&type=product&id=1118845250084

Please place the images you wish to bring on a folder named "WAS" on your
USB key. Make sure the folder only contains images you wish to present.

What Makes a Good Image??

There has been always a debate/discussion, both in and out of every photography class, about what constitutes a good photograph. Or if this is a false question entirely: it can't be determined because the medium, since it contains an element of artistry, is too subjective and that context (how the picture was made, under what circumstances, and how the elements of composition work in that particular picture) is too important.

It is often hard to tell if a photograph "works" or not, and if so, why or why not. It's difficult for many of us to critique work.

Please bring some of your thoughts and a combination of images of your work and perhaps other's and text: text as part of the image, or as a caption, or as commentary.

We hope to see you there.

If you are a key holder of our Studio ,please try toshow up since we will cover what's Kosher and what's not regarding the studio.
