Do you have something to show? Do you have something to say? what is a documentary photograph?« (Solomon-Godeau 1991: 169). This question is asked by Abigail Solomon-Godeau who supplies right away twoanswers: »With equal justice one might respond by saying just about everything or alternatively, just about nothing! This very contradiction is symptomatic of the discourse. The first idea, that basically any photograph is documentary, is one that can be traced throughout the entire history of photography. Therefore it seems to be useful to begin by further elaborating on this aspect. Documentary photography is supposed to depict first hand experience in a faithful and direct manner. Consequently, authenticity is considered to be one of the most significant aspects of documentary photography. The power of photography , especially of documentary photographs ,is to visualize certain aspects of life or the world and to prove and circumstantiate the narrative going along with it. The intention of this kind of photography is to show something as it is which means, the author of the photograph tries as far as possible to achieve a congruency between her own perception of reality and the reality shown in the image. Improve your photographic skills with guidance from one the best photographers in this First Master series . One word describes Lou Jones : Direct! Lou Jones is one of Boston's most diverse & inspiring commercial & fine art photographers, known for his courage, creative skill & humanity. http://fotojones.com /history/history.htm l http://fotojones.com /history/history.htm l http://www.shutterbu g.com/features/0405l oujones/ Lou Jones will cover these subject ; 1- The making of a documentary 2-Olympics 3-Jails 4-Pregnant 5-Jazz 7-Cuba 8-tall ships There is Q & A after the workshop .Please be courteous and wait until the class is over unless Mr. Jones decides differently. Cost : $26.00 per person We will collect the fee as you RSVP. Pros keep in mind ,this is very valuable to your resume. Dont miss this great opportunity. thanks Banafsheh Event fee: USD26.00 per person

"When you hear an investor talk about their portfolio, they are referring to all of the stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and other investments they own. " Any editor/curator would also see it that way . They judge by looking @ the photographer's portfolio and it is somehow all you own! Meaning that each image in the portfolio presents your art , your craft and how well do you know it and how well you own it! In short ,the portfolio is a display of your accomplishments! Creating a portfolio of your work is one of the most important things you can accomplish as a photographer. I will cover the BASIC of what you need to know and how you can put a portfolio together. So bring your portfolio , we'll look at them together and perhaps help you to see where you are planning to go or to do with your portfolio and Basically what you can do to make a better portfolio.Perhaps if you are thinking ,well I dont want to go pro or show it anyone ,but how about your grand-children!? Please keep in mind ,this would be very basic since it takes a BIG chunk of time to really put a great portfolio together , but I'm sure ,you will gain a certain understanding! thanks Banafsheh Show full description

Martin schoeller in my opinion is perhaps one the best portrait photographer. I think of him as a "straight shooter"! Martin Schoeller, who began his career in Germany, arrived in the U.S. in 1993 and began producing portraits of people he met on the street. The work gained recognition for its strong visual impact. Since 1999, Schoeller?s work appears frequently as contributing photographer for The New Yorker. Martin?s work also appears in Rolling Stone, Esquire, GQ , Entertainment Weekly, Vogue, W, Newsweek, Interview, and Nylon, among others. http://www.stern.de/ unterhaltung/fotogra fie/544485.html?back ref=%2Funterhaltung% 2Ffotografie%2F54439 2.html&nv=fs& cp=1 I thought this would be a great opportunity for us to get together and see some really wonderful photography. We could meet at the Museum around 1pm and perhaps shoot the ground of the Griffin ( if you wish) later. the entrance is $5.00 . Griffin is wonderful non-profit organization. if the link above is not working please this link http://www.hastedhun t.com/photos.php?a=m artin_schoeller& i=56606 "click and shoots" are our interactive free event where we all get together to shoot and talk Photography and help each other with technical questions. see you there Banafsheh

We drove to the Cape , me and Mr. McVinney. And it was truly Beautiful. I also checked the cottage in Eastham that I will be renting for the overnight and it is fine for 5 people. The Cape in the winter time is totally different than any other seasons especially the usual summer time.It feels that it is finally yours and not the tourists. The air is different ,the colors are different ,the dunes are different and the lighting is soft and pleasant. As the sun was starting to set , we decided to look for few beaches. We found one off Route 6A as we drove toward Eastham. It was odd to see the Cape's famous dunes dusted with snow. We were both in awe and left the car and just enjoyed the novelty of strolling along the snow-covered sand and the waves that had turned into ice, listening to the sounds of the sea and allowing the brisk February air to awaken our senses. It was truly magical. WORKSHOP : THE POETIC WINTER (Cape cod ,Ma, a two day workshop) Participants bring to the all-day, hands-on workshop their camera (film 50 ISO-3200 ISO Color or B&W or digital), a tripod OR a monopods. We will leave Boston Saturday morning around 10.00am and arrive to the Cape for Lunch ,we well shoot around Eastham and Orleans and Wellfleet on our first day right into the sunset. We will stay at the cottage in Easthem and We will discuss our challenges regarding shooting the snow and winter lighting. The second day (Sunday) after an early Breakfast we will be heading toward Truro and Provincetown. We will be shooting all along the Beaches and the towns and after a late lunch/early dinner we will be heading back to Boston around 5.00 PM and we'll arrive around 7:00/7:30 PM. This workshop is limited to 4 people only since I like to pay attention to each individual . Price for the workshop : $170.00 this includes your ride to the Cape and around the Cape and one night (shared room) in the cottage. I will send more info to everyone with a RSVP yes.If you have any questions ,please dont hesitate to email me. These are Chuck's images since I shot film/Toy camera today. THIS IS A FANTASTIC SURVEY: The HBDI is the Herrman Brain Dominance Instrument. It is a survey (NOT A TEST) to find out what our thinking preferences are as we work, interact with others and go about our daily lives. It is a metaphor for how the brain works. It identifies several different "styles" or ways of thinking that create a visible profile of our likes and dislikes when thinking through problems, communicating with other people, and working on our everyday tasks. It only takes about 15 minutes to fill out, pencil and paper, and the return information is kept confidential - only you decide to share or not. WHY TO DO IT? Besides helping you personally in understanding why you enjoy somethings and don't enjoy others, it will help you better manage your own time and work.IT WILL GIVE YOU AN UNDERSTANDING ON WHAT KIND OF SUBJECTS YOU MAY/SHOULD BE CONCENTRATING IN ORDER TO BE A BETTER PHOTOGRAPHER (VERY IMPORTANT). It will affirm who you are in a new way. The cost is Free for our members . HBDI charges about $175.00 per person for this very desirable survey. It is done with major corporations. More important , we are starting to launch a project called " the Photographer's Brain" and we would like our members to participate in the project.I will will give more information regarding the project. For our second hour ,We 'll have a photo critique. This is something that I usually avoid to do with the Members of BPC since I do it full time as a photo-editor .But since I have received more than a few emails ,then I say bring it on and we'll go through some of your images one by one. Please Not a portfolio since that would take time of others but pick 4 of your images that you need hear what others think about. Hope to see you soon. B

This is a basic all you need to know workshop that would teach you from the basics of exposure, manipulation of depth of field, shutter speed, f-stops and focal range to the ultimate goal of creating compelling photographs with your camera. Choices of subject matter, the framing of an image, composition, light and shadows and appropriate treatment of portraits, landscapes, or action photo are some of the subject that will be covered in this workshop. You learn that cameras are much simpler to use and you will become very comfortable by understanding manual modes of exposure, natural light and difficult lighting situations. For our second hour I will be covering Depth of Field which plays a big role in the outcome of an image, exposure, lense s,light and accessories will be covered. This is 4 day workshop and each session will be 2.5 hours.
