SHOW AND TELL

Bring in some of the photos, you've created, during our past summer. I personally will not have the best prints, or composition, but I'd be interested in your comments. I'd like to see the work you've been doing, and would like to hear your comments made about our work.

We will also discuss ideas for subject/topic, for nest months "Show and Tell"

Cost: $5.00

Portland Maine is a vibrant place with art, coastline, street photography, and harbor cruises to outlying islands. There is a vibrant night life.

This link is a carfree map of Portland.

This link is from Amtrak showing information on Portland.

The date for this shoot is a week after Labor Day, so there will be fewer tourists to contend with and prices for dinner and such might be lower than now.

The train from North Station leaves at 11:10AM, I will board the train in Woburn at 11:28AM. The last train of the day leaves for home at 8pm. With luck, we will be able to get some late day sun or even a sunset.

More details will follow as we get closer. If people here are familiar with the area I would love to hear suggestions for shooting locations.

I changed this from OOB to Portland for several reasons, one being small turn out, and the second it conflicts with a popular event Bonnie is running at Belle Island Marsh, and third there is more for everyone to shoot.

Thank you.

Leigh

THE LENS

Most still cameras have four basic things in common.
1st – a light tight enclosure, which excludes unwanted light
2nd – a hole which lets in wanted light
3rd – a surface upon which the wanted light is projected, for direct viewing, or recording
4th – a device for controlling how long the wanted light, streams through the hole.

Sounds simple, and is simple, but today’s cameras have come a long way baby! At the next meeting we are going to discuss the modern photographic camera lens’s functions, and properties. There will be an emphasis on F/stops, and what they, all of them, can do for you. There will be a suggested, but NOT required, assignment, to take the principals of the discussion, and apply them to some photographs, of your own creation. I ask that you bring in some of your results, either on a flash card or prints, to the following meeting. We will spend the first half of that meeting reviewing the f/stop photos, and then move on to shutter speeds, and what they can do for you.

Both f/stops and shutter speeds can be ignored, and you can get lucky, if you set your camera to an automatic setting. Join us at the next meeting, for the beginning of a short series of cameras 101.

The Lowell Southeast Asian Water Festival, Inc. is dedicated to the preservation, protection and sharing of the cultural heritages of the Southeast Asian Americans of Greater Lowell, Massachusetts area.

Every 3rd Saturday in August, more than 60,000 people from around the country and the world come to Lowell to celebrate water as it is celebrated in Southeast Asia. They come for the blessings, food, crafts, performances and (of course) the races.

Lowell Water Festival website

According to the website, the best places to park at the UMass Lowell parking lots, there will be free shuttles going to the races and festival. There is the north and south parking lots. Even though the race starts at 10:30AM, I think meeting an hour earlier will be good, so we have a greater chance of securing free parking spaces. I am going to be at the South campus parking lot around 9:30AM.

Do you miss the days when streetcars were the only way to commute? Do your parents or grandparents talk of things like the Eastern Mass Street Railway or Boston Elevated Street Railway (BERY)? Have you wondered how the MBTA got started?

The answers to all these questions can be found riding the rails at the Seacoast Trolley Museum. They have BERY Type V street cars, a true beauty. They have center entrance cars, PCCs (can be seen in Dorchester on the Ashmont Line), and many other cars.

Do you remember the Elevated subway that became the Orange Line? They have an old station from that old line.

If this sounds interesting, and I know it does come join me in exploring and riding on these beautiful cars of yesteryear.
