About The Vancouver Photography Meetup Group

Welcome to the Vancouver Photography Meetup Group

The Vancouver (Canada) Photography Meetup is a group looking to meet often and learn about all aspects of photography and photographic art. We aim to regularly seek information and share our knowledge freely, collaborate to create excellent experiences for learning, to make friends, and to help each other realize our own creative potential.

Our membership ranges from new beginner photographers, through the full range of amateurs and hobbyists, to pros, (all with a respect and appreciation for manual and digital technologies), AND we have members with an interest in photography from various perspectives... such as designers, artists and models. The greatest part of this is we're all proud to be part of this diverse group.

What We Do

Based on feedback from the entire group through our Polls, our activies include:

  • Go out on field trips with others in the group for recreation
  • Host workshops on topics such as composition, technical setup, and gear demos
  • Regular photo contests with themes
  • Share information and knowledge amongst ourselves on our Message Boards
  • Network with other photographers and those interested in photography
  • Meet new people, learn about each other and the world around us
  • And best of all... make new friends, get out and about in Vancouver, and have FUN!

Group Guidelines

Membership & Participation

Anyone may join the group, and there are no minimum gear requirements for joining. In fact, membership is not limited to photographers but may include anyone interested in photography or photographic art. New photographers may benefit from membership as they may ask others to help with their first camera purchase. Models, artists and designers (and others, including art historians and photography lovers) are all welcome to become part of our group. The basic requirements are a keen desire to have fun, meet friends, learn about photography and photographic art, and share with others what you know and learn.

There are no requirements for remaining active. A member may be removed from the group for inactivity if the Meetup.com site purges the member's account based on an inactive email address (which they do from time to time). Should the system remove a member because of inactivity, that person may sign up again at any time.

Group Fees

The organizer is responsible for the fees for the group to Meetup.com (which amounts to about $15 per month). Other costs as they arise are also the responsibility of the organizer. A small event fee will be collected from members attending events to contribute to the costs associated with the group. All monies collected will be used to benefit the group, at the discretion of the organizer, who may (from time to time) share the balance sheet and engage the group for input on spending.

Respect & Personal Privacy

The foundation of this group is respect for each other, respect for each others' personal privacy, and the fostering of respect for all things in general.

Any racist, religious, sexist or otherwise inappropriate comment posted by a member (or guest) that is directed at another member or at the group, will be dealt with harshly and in a timely manner, at the discretion of the Organizer.

Further, this particular group is interested in exploring and supporting personal privacy in the world of photography vis a vis the delicate and controversial issues around snapping pictures of people without their permission. This group is not about having fun while exploiting photos taken of people (and posting such photos on the Internet), or playing games of "paparazzo", or otherwise supporting the notion of carefree snapping of people whether of group members or of the public, without due respect.

Assistant Organizers

Any member is eligible to become and remain an assistant organizer at the discretion of the organizer.

The critieria for becoming an assistant organizer is as follows:

  • A desire to lead Meetup Events that are included or aligned with the group's Poll Results and Wishlists for Field Trips and Learning Events
  • Communicates and clears Event ideas and dates with the group's organizer prior to posting
  • Commits to a date and itinerary for their chosen event and follows through as planned
  • Manages communication with and generally cares about the well being of members who RSVP -- before, during and after the event
  • Uses the group's tools appropriately for communication around events as set out with the assistant by the group's organizer

The criteria for remaining as an assistant organizer for the group is as follows:

  • Continues to lead events using same criteria above
  • Leads events for the group at least once every three months -- assistant organizers who do not lead events within a period of three months will be asked to step down (but are eligible to become an assistant organizer again at any time in the future should they meet the above criteria)
  • Perform or manage non-Event based tasks, if specifically arranged with the organizer, such as lead photography challenges similar to the 10 Things Challenge, greeting new members when they sign up, etc.

Message Boards & Commercial Advertising

Use of the group message boards for personal or political exploitation, or commercial advertising (whether by the operator of an organization, or by others on behalf of an organization), is discouraged and is subject to deletion by the organizer. Anyone wishing to advertise a business or external event is welcome to contact the organizer to discuss benefits and the best method of communicating it to the group.

Members are free to announce photography events in the community or other photography related organizations to the message boards for the benefit of the group. Members may also advertise (shamelessly!) their own businesses or brag about anything else on the Shameless Advertising thread on the message board.
