The Fall season, in my opinion is one of the best times of the year to get out and shoot! I feel like there just isn't enough time to cram in every place I want to visit!. Anyway, back a few months ago I secured the pavilion out at Long Hunter State park to have our 1st meetup picnic. I took the the only available Saturday they had left for October, which Im hoping will work to our good so that we can get some of the fall colors!
We will have use of the picnic shelter for the whole day and the photo op's will be endless!!!
The poll results for catering vs. potluck is.............. Potluck. So, we will be getting the dinner part of this together real soon. We are also going to have several photo contest and i would love to hear your ideas on what kind of contest to have. So far we have come up with, FALL, BEST CANDID, FUNNIEST. So, come on and send me your ideas!!!!
I also encourage you all to bring your portfolio's or photo albums to share with everyone.

BRING THE CAMERAS AND THE FAMILY!

We will update this as we go along.

It's Tennessee State Fair time! This means lots of food, rides, lights, and livestock! You can find it all at the Tennessee State Fair. We can get very creative with our photography at the fair. There is so much to see. What I would like to see is some of the "off the beaten path" things such as pie eating contests, livestock competitions, grilling and cooking contests, etc. Not to mention that the lights at night make for some pretty amazing motion shots! I can't wait to see what you get!

FREE PARKING

If historic events were ranked like historic sites, the Tennessee State Fair would be very close to the top of the list! Each year, the Tennessee State Fair features great educational and entertaining exhibits, livestock, agricultural, and creative arts competitions for blue ribbons and more than $200,000 in premiums money.

Experience the largest midway company in the country, racing pigs, mule pulling, cow milking, sorghum making, grilling and cooking competitions, all the silly photo fun in the Family Fun Zone and new this year; Kids Country.

Take a trip through time in Volunteer Village. Challenge your brother, sister, mother or father in Wii bowling, or get a family feud of guitar hero organized. This year promises to be one of the best family gatherings in State Fair history with great food, and great times at a great value!

The Ocoee is in east Tennessee near Cleveland! There will be lots to photograph and tons of adventure.

The plan? We will meet at the Olympic Center on Hwy 64 at 9 am Saturday morning. We will get the opportunity to photograph some of the playboaters doing their water stunts, and then we will car pool to a couple of different waterfalls that are raging in the area. We will have a picnic lunch at one of the waterfalls and then just spend the day leisurly sight seeing and taking pictures. This will be sort of a relaxing day just taking in the scenery through the Cherokee National Forest and shooting pics... enjoying the atmosphere and everyone's company.

If you choose the spend the night in the area, there is plenty of camping. I suggest reserving a hotel in Cleveland if you choose to get a hotel.

On Sunday, for those of us who will be staying overnight, we will meet up at the Cherokee Rafting Company to brave the rapids on the Ocoee River. The cost is $26.03 per person and will need to be paid in advance. All money will need to be paid by August 8th if you intend to raft. You are more than welcome to bring your friends and family, but keep in mind that all children must be 12 years old in order to be able to raft. For those of you who do not want to raft, we would love to have some photos of us coming down the river. There are plenty of spots to shoot along the banks, including a spot that has been named Hell Hole, which has some pretty dangerous rapids. This is also where you will find lots of stunt playboaters. This is something you do not want to miss.

The cutoff for the rafting trip is August 8th. Please do not forget this! The rafting company requires me to pay in advance to reserve our spot on the river. I will need your $26.03 to pay for your spot which you will need to pay at the time of your RSVP. If you need to pay cash, then you need to make arrangements to get it to me before the 8th.

Hope to see you all there! This is going to be so much fun! I hope that you all come. Even if you do not want to raft, you could still make a day trip on Saturday. It is only a two hour drive from Nashville. You do not need to RSVP if you only want to hang out with us on Saturday. Everyone is welcome to come. But if you want to raft with us on Sunday, then you need to RSVP yes to this event, and pay your rafting fee of $26.03 per person.

So, How many members out there own Adobe Photoshop or Elements raise your hand! Okay, how many of you that raised your hand feel you need some help with these amazing but somewhat confusing programs? Well hopefully next months meetup will be able to help us get a little better understanding of these programs. A member of our Meetup group, Deb, is going to come and talk with us on the basic's. There were a few members that offered to share some of their photoshop skills with us also, and I am hoping with enough interest that we can set up some small groups to continue these photoshop meetings.

Here is a few words from Deb herself - Be sure to check out her website!!!!!

Deb Franks
Adobe Rep and longtime Photoshop/Photoshop Elements user.
Digital Photographer that went through the Online self passed New York Institute of Photography Course.
NAPP Member for 7 years.

I became interested in photography when it became digital and I could manipulate it in my PC. Photoshop and I became friends and I spent many hours reading and learning the program to turn my photos into art. At this meet up I will talk to you about both programs and see what may be the best one for you. I will go over work flow and organization. I will talk basic editing. I will leave it open for questions for the most part. If there is an interest for more learning, I would be willing to hold classes for both or either Adobe program. I would like this to be a Q and A meeting, with me going over some of the features before we open it up to questions. Please take a look at my over 600 photos I have posed on PBASE. You can get to that link by going to www.debfranks.com I really look forward to making you feel more comfortable using your Adobe products.

We will be meeting at the Hometown Buffet in Madison for dinner and photoshop talk. Buffet cost is around 12.00 (if the price hasnt changed since we were all there in Feb).
I am also limiting this to 40 people with you only being able to RSVP Yes or No.

Thanks,

Let me start by stating that this is not an official meetup! Meagan and I have plans to shoot some waterfalls and I wanted to extend the invitation.

We will be traveling to Burgess Falls and Rock Island State Park on August 1st.

Burgess Falls State Park: We will meet at Burgess Falls State Park office located at 4000 Burgess Falls Drive in Sparta, TN at 8:00 am. The main 1.5-mile round-trip river trail/service road loop takes you past four waterfalls on the Falling Water River. The waterfalls are 20' cascades, 30' upper falls, 80' middle falls, and 136' lower falls in height. Most people prefer to hike back to the parking lot along the service road. The 1-mile Ridge Top Trail is very scenic with views down the main canyon of the Falling Water River. Trails are moderate in difficulty. All trails are foot trails. Bikes, horses, etc. are not permitted.

After shooting the falls at Burgess Falls, we will decide on a place to have lunch and then make our way over to Rock Island State Park which is about 30 minutes away.

Rock Island State Park: We will meet at the state park office located at 82 Beach Road in Rock Island, TN after lunch. The scenic beauty of this wooded park is dominated by the Great Falls of the Caney Fork River - an imposing limestone gorge (called a gulf in southern culture). It provides scenic overlooks, waterfalls and deep pools for fishing, rock-hopping and exploring. Located at the confluence of the Collins and Caney Fork Rivers, this 883-acre park has a natural sand beach on Center Hill Resevoir. Historic features of the park include a 19th century textile mill and one of Tennessee's early hydroelectric plants. The two main falls at this park, Twin Falls and Great Falls, does not require any hiking. The falls are located right off the road and an overlook is provided with a great view of the falls.

I have called both state park offices to inquire as to where the sun will be rising and setting in comparison to the location of the falls, and I am pretty sure that I have planned our trip for the best lighting when shooting waterfalls. Burgess Falls is a fairly big wooded area that should provide enough shade to block the sun from shining directly on the falls so that is why I decided to start with this one. The state park office at Rock Island told me that the sun will set behind the falls at their location so I believe evenig light will be better for this location.

If you want to do both or one of these locations, that is fine. I hope to see a lot of you there. If you need to call me, my number is 418-0689.

Thanks

Wendy

Here's one for the Early Birds of the meetup Group.

We are going to have July's meetup down in Murfreesboro at the Murfree Spring Wetland Park. This is a great little park full of photo ops and is VERY kid friendly!
T Below is copied from the park site:

Murfree Spring Wetlands is a 25-acre city park and under the jurisdiction of the City of Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department. It is located at the corner of Maney and Broad Streets. Walking trails and raised boardwalks wind through the wetlands, while the plaza area boasts an amphitheater and water features. The area offers parking, restrooms, and a playground, all of which has easy access to the Discovery Center, a hands-on children’s museum.

Wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems in the world, comparable to rain forests and coral reefs. The restoration and preservation of this irreplaceable resource in Murfreesboro serves not only local wildlife, but also teaches our citizens to love, appreciate, and protect wetlands everywhere.
fountains

The site was once an old water treatment plant; now the role of water in our everyday lives and its presence on the site is a guiding theme in the design. Targeted towards a child’s curiosity and sense of whimsy, the railings, fountains, and paving patterns have been designed to capture the industrial and mechanical look of the equipment in the old plant and the fluid characteristics of water in the environment. Several pieces of old pump equipment were salvaged from the water treatment plant and refurbished as environmental sculptures in the plaza.
looking out wetlands

Silhouettes of popular wetland flora and fauna form interactive interpretive signage along the boardwalks. A retaining wall becomes the History Wall, depicting a timeline of the area from prehistoric to current happenings on the site. Stepping stones through a pond-like water feature demonstrate an aquatic food chain. Opportunities for learning abound!

Junes Meetup is going to be at Old Stone Fort park located an 1 hours drive from Nashville, down I-24 in Manchester, Tn. We will meet at the main trail parking area at 10 AM. (YES I said 10 AM) You might want to consider grabbing a few friends to Car-Pool with.

OLD STONE FORT
This is a great archeological area with plenty of beautiful rock formations made of many different types of rock including slate. There are several waterfalls located around this 1 ¼ mile trail. The museum will provide you with a map that marks the waterfalls as well as some of the other interesting Civil War History.
The trail itself is very easy to walk. It is all pretty much flat. You can get to the largest waterfall as well as the dam without having to leave the main trail. I will tell you, however that the other waterfalls along the trail are located just off of the lower alternative trail, and it is very difficult to get to with a lot of camera equipment. It will take some teamwork because you have to do a little rock climbing. Someone will need to hold your tripod and camera bag and hand it down to you after you descend. If you are an inexperienced hiker, I do not suggest that you leave the main trail. Please do not try to reach the falls alone. Please stay with a partner or a group.
Be prepared to get wet from the knees down. Wear shoes in the creeks if you decide to wade through the smaller falls. The rocks are very, very slippery… but even more so if you are barefooted. Wear your tennis shoes! I do not suggest flip flops.
Bring plenty of water to drink and possibly a few snacks. If you take your leisurely time, it could take you all of 5 or 6 hours to see all of the falls and shoot all of the sites. If you plan on only shooting the dam and the main falls from the main trailhead, then it is a simple 200 ft walk from the parking lot.
Hope to see you there!

Thanks,
Donna (337-5149) and Wendy

From the Tennessee RenFest web site.

Travel back to 16th Century England. Our Village of Covington Glen comes alive with the bustle of a Renaissance Marketplace. Over 60 skilled Artisians from all over the country display their wares from silks to swords, gems to jewels. Flavors, aromas and tastes of specialty foods and drinks greet the festival-goer. Hear the sounds of Renaissance musicians and merrymakers as they echo through the trees. Color, movement, and peals of laughter welcome those who thrill to the challenges of Games of Skill and Man-Powered Rides.

The the theme for the weekend of the May 16th is Pirate Invasion.

This will be my first Renfest, so I am not sure about where to meet. The safest bet would be to say in the parking lot close to the gates around 2 PM.

Tickets are 18.00 for a 1 day adult pass and 16.00 if purchased in advance.

PLEASE READ

These meetups are put together so that members can meet other photographers and share ideas and have fun shooting. While most everyone is willing to share their knowledge of photography, PLEASE understand that this is NOT a PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS! Come to the meetups - Ask Questions - Make Friends and most importantly HAVE FUN doing what you love to do.

Thanks,
Donna
