Who organized?

Jeffery Luhn, a professional photographer for 30 years, is planning a Free Lighting Seminar and Shooting Event in Sacramento on Saturday, May 24 from 1-4PM. The seminar will cover the use of strobe and natural lighting for people shooting. Visit www.luhnphoto.com to see his work.

Jeff needs some "people in action' shots of a health club that is being converted into a community center and this assignment is the perfect opportunity to combine a shooting session with a lighting seminar. It will be fun, informative and you'll get some exercise!

Attendees will be students, photographers and models at this event. Wear comfortable workout clothes and expect to be learning to work with lights, shooting photos, modeling for photos and signing a model release so the shots can appear on a website promoting the new Sacramento Family Fitness Community Center, a nonprofit health center. (If you object to a photo of yourself, it will not be used) We just need regular people for this shoot. All sizes, races, genders, ages, etc. Its okay to bring your family and friends because we need some 'exercise class' shots. It is hoped that we'll have at least 30 people at this event. Please don't bring children under the age of 12.

Here's the schedule:

Hour 1: Overview of the 5 basic lighting patterns used in all portraiture, advertising, Hollywood films, etc. Discussion of what studio strobe lights are, how they work and why they are the lighting of choice for people shots. Demonstration of lighting usage, contrast control and shooting safety. Anyone that wants to shoot better people shots of family and friends can benefit from this class. Students will learn that strobe lights are inexpensive and easy to work with.

Hour 2: We will set up some locations and cover the basics of posing, composition and directing models. Although the assignment will be to shoot people in a health club, the set ups will all relate to general portraiture. We'll demonstrate the use of umbrellas, softboxes, spotlights and barn doors. Some tungsten lights will be in operation for people that have 'point and shoot cameras' that cannot work with strobes. We'll start shooting around 2:30 PM.

Hour 3 and 4: Interactive shooting, posing, directing, modeling, etc. (Managed mayhem) Jeff will circulate throughout the action tutoring students, getting shots and answering questions. We'll all have a chance to work with the lights, learn the basics and see what its like to take part in a commercial shooting session.

Summary: Students will be asked to submit their best shots online to be shown on the Meet Up site and used on the Family Fitness website. Photo credits will accompany all the shots that are used online. Selected photos will become the property of Sacramento Family Fitness. No submitted photos will be used for any other purpose except the website described on this announcement. All students may use the photos for their own portfolios, but are asked not to sell them or use them in anyway that will defame or upset their fellow students. This is going to be a nonprofit community center, so we want happy wholesome shots.
