Meeting Description

Who

You have a camera or are planning to get one soon. Things change rapidly .. what to expect next? Phones now are cameras and computers are almost small enough to wear on the wrist. Or, you bought Kodak and Polaroid stock & want some reassurance!

Why

Share experiences: a news photographer for a major metro, Blogging and Tweeter use online, a professional studio photographer, high-tech wizards, people well versed in using PhotoShop, Canon AE1 film cameras and Nikon digital..and a Speed Graphic!

Organized by

"My distinctive Tilley hat has a "Press Card" tucked in the hat band"

Details

The restaurant is across from Northwoods Mall (off Rivers onto Eagle Landing Blvd) and has a meeting space set aside for us. The room will have a horseshoe-shaped table to make conversation easier, better and face-to-face. A notebook/video projector will be on hand so either bring your favorite shots burned to a CD/DVD or simply plan to enjoy seeing what others have been doing.

The SC Photographers Guild has issued its schedule of local "camera field trips" for all of 2008. Experts can be invited to come to talk about digital changes and the internet. Citizen journalism (blogging) can be discussed by print journalists. The newest innovations can be explained in layman's terms by people who know what they are talking about.

Digital cameras get more powerful and smaller and ...the yet, the price keeps dropping. Find out what to look for when you shop. What computer and/or printer should be your own personal darkroom/film processor? Are there film developers still out there? Custom labs?

Or it might just turn out to be a good monthly social event.

Come and give your input. Bring your camera for a lively "Show and Tell." Oh, and be sure to RSVP. It helps the planning process.

James and Ron: I suggest for the first "monthly topic" we ask everyone to bring their best shot(s) of SOMETHING ROUND. A month should be long enough to develop that idea. Comments?

So that was a lot of fun. Some ideas for future meetings if anyone cares: I think it would be neat to have a monthly homework assignment (and I think a month is plenty of time to get it done); this would allow us to see different interpretations of the same idea AND allow for some criticism (I don't know about anyone else, but that's how I learn best). Anyway, just a thought!

I'm sad to not be able to make it to this event. I had such a blast last time. Hopefully I'll be able to attend the next one.

Oops. I neglected to remind members coming to the Meetup that we are meeting in a private room at a GREAT restaurant. Please plan to eat at our Meetup. That helps get us a free room! Last month, we had several members eat nearby before they arrived and a few ate out front in the North Towne Grille but only a few actually ate AT our meeting! Come hungry, eat and drink well and meet your photography friends. In our free room. Thanks.

Who Attended

The organizer estimated that 9 people attended.

  • Ron
"A couple new peeps showed up who were great to meet. Welcome BTW! ; ) Food was good, conversation was good, and the presentation went well."

  • Terry
"Good meeting ... as usual. Thanks Chuck for organizing the group."

  • Chuck

"Most brought photos for the Show & Tell and interest was high as they were projected. Probably need to limit each to about 20-25 pictures so the program moves along. An "assignment" for each month was suggested: all shooting a common object/topic so variation of expression can be seen. Good idea!"

  • Frank
"Fun to look at other people's pictures. I got some new ideas to try and was encouraged to explore photoshop."

  • Wendell
"Great meeting, I can see where I will expand my skills by coming to the meetings."

  • Carolina Girl
"It was fun meeting new people who share the same interests."
