Meeting Description: Hello Virginian Photographers.

I am not expecting a lot of interest in this event since it is in a location that many of you may not be able to come out to.

Dickey Ridge is a spot along the Skyline Drive which stretches north-south along the Shenandoah national Park. Front Royal is located at the North end of the park. There is a fee to enter the park.

Sun sets at 7:54 PM on the 19th. Moon rises at 7:33 PM. By the time of sunset the moon will have been in the rise for 21 minutes. The moon moves one degree for every four minutes of time which means by sunset it will be up about 5 degrees. Twilight lasts approximately 30 minutes after sunset which give the moon another 7 degrees to rise for a total of 12 degrees. That places the moon just above the mountains on the east side of the park. And since during the twilight the sky is still sort of bright it is easy to capture the moon in the sky with scenery in the background.

As the sunsets, the warm lights will cast on the east presenting another opportunity to do some scenery photography. So three things are happening: Sunset itself, warm lights of the sunset on the east, and the moon in relatively bright sky. That is if the weather is clear enough. With some clouds in the sky, the lights will be even more amazing.

I am combining a little hiking adventure with this photography opportunity so I will be there at around 4:30 PM to hike 2.5 miles down the Dickey Ridge trail and 2.5 miles up. By the time I come back I will have about 30 minutes to catch my breath and setup with my tripod. I am expecting I will be there until about 9:00 PM.

If you are interested in the photography and the hike then I can drive you up so we can use my season pass and get in for free. If you are interested in photography alone then you should be sure and to get there in time to setup for east and west shoot and do bring your best lens if you have a DSLR and a tripod.

The Visitor Center is 8 miles into the park. The park north entrance is just south of Front Royal.
